When a school that has placed you on its waitlist says that it wants no more information from you, this is some kind of “test,” and you should supply additional materials anyway. As we have discussed in the past, this is patently not true. Similarly, when programs tell their waitlisted candidates they are open to  important  additional communication, such applicants should  not  interpret this to mean  constant  communication. The difference is significant. As is the case with any waitlist situation, before you do  anything,  carefully read the waitlist letter you received from the Admissions Office. Frequently, this will include a FAQ sheet or a hyperlink to one. If the school permits candidates to submit additional information but offers no guidance with respect to quantity, this does not mean that you should start flooding the committee with novel information and materials. Modern American poets, contending with the disruption of traditionalism in culture, thought that the preoccupation that arose concerning the confines, possibilities, and influence of words that allows for the cultivation of twentieth-century art advanced both poetry and prose. The poets concern themselves with the notion that the agency of communication through words is inexorable yet impossible without knowledge, ultimately radically changing poetic tradition and the way in which language is thought of. I will discuss the theme of authority being given where no ability is present because of lack of knowledge in two twentieth-century poems: â€Å"Naming the Animals† by Anthony Hecht and â€Å"The Recognition of Eve† by Karl Shapiro. Although Adam is depicted as a natural poet through being given the authority and ability to begin naming in the Biblical account of the creation, Hecht poses an alternative in which Adam’s uncertainty about language is a result of hi s absence of knowledge before transgression, while Shapiro’s poem explores the idea of Eve as dominant and knowledgeable. The strong diction and descriptive nature of both poems enforce the idea that reluctance and failure to communicate with language directly arises from an absence of knowledge. Though man is illustrated as the natural poet in Genesis, these two poems suggest that language cannot be properly executed unless knowledge is gained in some way. Identification of another entity forms unification between the beings. Naming brings us closer to what has been named by turning the opposing entity into a coherent object. Classifying other beings with names forms a personal relationship, like that of a parent naming its child. The Biblical account of creation entails God giving Adam the authority to name each animal that he created in order to develop a relationship between man and animal (King James Version, Gen, 2.19). Hecht explores the notion of naming something with specificity which is normally named generically, and how language can have a disconnect between humans. In the Bible, animals are divided from humans, for humans are to have dominion over all that God had created, yet Hecht undermines the division between the seemingly separate entities through his humorous diction and tone. Animals are most often referred to by the generic name of their species when spoken of, which is what God had commanded Adam to â€Å"bestow /†¦upon all the creatures,† He had created (â€Å"Naming the Animals† 1-2). The animals were to be â€Å"yclept,† by Adam, being given the same authority of the poet who uses language to develop meaning (8). The poet uses opulent diction filled with wit, adopting comic intentions into his work through the meaning and undertone of his words. â€Å"Yclept†, although meaning â€Å"named†, is used with serio-comic intention by authors to u ndermine the weight of the work (OED 1.a. â€Å"Yclept†). Hecht’s version of Adam allocated a personal name to the creature, endowing a deeper sense of meaning to their relationship with humorous intent. The author playfully teases readers to enforce the idea that literature, specifically the Bible, and language, is not always to be taken so literally, and is to be looked at with different meanings. Hecht’s use of his diction having an ulterior meaning represents the significance of knowledge being advantageous for Adam to understand what God had truly meant by naming, and largely, that language is not always apt for communication without this desired knowledge. Conversely, Shapiro analyzes what it means to name something with lack of specificity that is normally specific. After naming each animal, and seeing no suitable helper for himself, God creates woman out of man’s rib. Upon seeing his helper for the first time, he immediately labels her ‘woman’ (Gen 2:23). Shapiro’s account of the creation of woman explores the idea of Eve speaking the first words of human and her naming Adam. His use of diction forms the notion of Eve identifying herself in relationship to Adam, naming without specificity, like Adam had in the Biblical account. In labelling him â€Å"thou†, Eve attempts to identify and categorize him and their relationship with each other (â€Å"The Recognition of Eve† 15). The use of calling Adam ‘you’ is an attempt at establishing a profound defining connection between the two humans. Eve speaking rather than Adam establishes the idea that Eve has some superior knowledge to Adam and an authority over him. Shapiro enforces the idea that Eve’s attempt at defining the relationship through the use of language fails as Adam becomes â€Å"terror-stricken† when she speaks and she resorts to physical touch â€Å"for he must feel the place to understand† (16; 18). Shapiro’s diction strengthens the contrasting effects between language and physical touch. Communication, here, is presented as effective only when physical touch is involved. His diction presents the idea that mere language is deficient when one individual lacks knowledge and the ability to understand. Many of God’s servants in the Old Testament are reluctant to follow God’s commands for fear of failure. Jeremiah, prophet of God, is reluctant to follow God’s commands for he believes he is incapable of speaking for he is too young (Jeremiah 1:6). His reluctance to communicate through language lies in his belief that he has a lack of knowledge due to his youth. He is hesitant to speak the word of God until he understands that God has given him the ability to communicate with his words. Although Adam is confident in his ability to name the animals in the Biblical account of the creation story, Hecht presents him as reluctant to follow through with God’s commands. Hecht uses the title, â€Å"Naming the Animals†, to present the commandment of God as being a seemingly simple and straightforward task. It is immediate and apparent to the reader what God has asked of Adam in this poem. However, the seemingly simple task becomes convoluted as the poem progresses. Hecht depicts Adam as reluctant to follow through with God’s commands in the same way as Jeremiah. His hesitancy also lies in his belief that he is lacking in the skill of communication through language. As God gives the command and disappears, Hecht notes that He â€Å"seemed to take no notice of the vexed / Look on the young man’s face† illustrating the trepidation that Adam will not be able to successfully accomplish what is asked of him. (â€Å"Naming† 5-6) This worryi ng ferments in Adam as he stands before the animals with â€Å"an addled mind and puddled brow† unsure how to advance (10). Hecht presents his readers with the sensory experience of a confused and worried man, reluctant to speak, for he is unsure if he can achieve what is being asked of him, in contrast to the confident and willing Adam in the Bible. His reluctance is derived from his belief that he lacks the knowledge to progress. In the same way, Shapiro depicts Adam as reluctant, and ultimately unable, to speak. Effective communication transpires when both parties can communicate equally and both contribute. In this depiction of the account, Eve presents Adam with the opportunity to respond to her, yet he fails to. His inability to communicate in return forces her to â€Å"(forget) him† and retreat from him in search of something else (â€Å"Recognition† 29). He, subsequently, is described as an observer. As Eve leaves him, he â€Å"could see her wandering through the wood, / (and studies) her footsteps as her body wove / In light and out of light,† enforcing the idea of Adam as the empirical observer (31-33). His lack of knowledge gives him the desire to understand Eve merely through observation with the prospect of gaining insight. Shapiro uses imagery in order to depict Adam in this way, making him the reluctant speaker, but the effective observer. The meaning of the title of the poem , â€Å"The Recognition of Eve†, becomes apparent when this is noted. Shapiro denotes Adam as the observer in that he comes to have a recognition of her through his observation. He attempts to recognize and know her through studying her actions as his inability to communicate with his words is made evident. The idea that recognition through observation in replacement of that from language forms the notion that an individual must first gain some knowledge prior to communicating linguistically with another. When the garden of Eden was formed, God planted a tree of knowledge of good and evil that Adam and Eve were forbidden to eat from for He stated that they would surely die if they did (Gen. 2:17). Original sin is the moment that Eve disobeyed God’s command and bit into a fruit from the tree. It was only from this act of transgression that Adam and Eve were able to gain knowledge. Despite it being sinful, both Hecht and Shapiro suggest that this sin has brought the knowledge necessary and ability for communication. The tree of knowledge, discerning evil from good, perhaps also contains knowledge in its entirety. Hecht continues to use diction with multiple meanings in order to create significance on those words. Adam is commanded â€Å"to bestow names† to all the animals in the garden of Eden. Hecht’s use of the word ‘bestow’ proposes the idea that their names are each a gift from Adam, and the ability for him to do this, if he could, would be a gift f rom god (OED 6.a. â€Å"Bestow†). Adam had not yet undergone the act of transgression from eating the fruit when he began to name the animals in Genesis. Hecht uses this very detail to suggest the idea that Adam, having not yet eaten from the tree of knowledge, could not possibly have the ability to fulfill a task that requires the very characteristic of knowledge. Language and communication, then, is unachievable without this act of transgression. Though Hecht never strictly refers to the act of transgression, the reader can infer from his depiction of Adam that he is lacking the knowledge, which would be gained from the act, necessary to complete his tasks. This poem indicates that perhaps the act of transgression was not harmful to the lives of humans, and was in fact, necessary, for it is only through language that relationships can be established and God’s commands can be achieved. Likewise, Shapiro also explores the notion that transgression is the sole method of gaining knowledge. It is apparent that Eve has some superior knowledge of where she came from, while Adam is in complete lack of it. Though she attempts to make him â€Å"understand† how she came to be made out of his rib, he cannot fathom in the same way that she does (â€Å"Recognition† 18). Her superiority is a suggestion that her being the first to eat from the tree of knowledge in the Biblical account somehow makes her knowledge vaster than his. Although the act of transgression has not yet occurred, it foreshadows what is soon to come. Shapiro makes references to Milton’s account of Eve truly seeing herself for the first time when she sees her reflection in a â€Å"pool† of water (33). The pool, not mentioned in the Biblical account, is mentioned by Milton in Paradise Lost. As Eve sees herself in this pool, and is â€Å"pined with vain desire† (Paradise Lost 4. 6) Adam’s observations lead him to believe â€Å"she was already turning beautiful† (â€Å"Recognition† 35). Eve, like Adam in this account, becomes the observer of herself and begins to recognize her humanity as beauty. Adam cannot yet fathom the derivation of her beauty, for he lacks the knowledge to do so. Though Eve is becoming aware of herself, she is not able to communicate her findings to Adam for he is unable to communicate back. Her humanity is incomprehensible to him for the act of transgression has not yet been undergone. Knowledge of each other and themselves increases when the fruit has been eaten. Both Shapiro and Hecht depict alternative accounts to the creation story in which Adam is both reluctant and deficient in performing what is asked of him because of his absence of knowledge, resulting in his inability to use linguistic skills. Both authors are aware that proper communication with a lack of knowledge is unachievable, and man cannot possibly have the natural gift of language, for language is a direct subsequent from knowledge. Though each author has distinctions in their vocabulary and syntax, both imply that language is suggested as compensation for original sin. The poet, being regarded as the creator who takes pre-existing conceptions and makes them new, is given the gift of language for the act of transgression. Communication, being essential to human life and society, is inconceivable without prior knowledge of how to use language.

Socrates and the Sophists (Platos Dialogues) In chapter 4, The Sophist: Protagoras, Soccio does an excellent job discussing a group of teachers and thinkers known collectively as sophists, and the social environment in which they flourished for a time. These professional educators were known for being widely travelled and thus having much experience with other cultures. This experience convinced many of them that there is no such thing as objective standards; we merely have a set of culturally determined beliefs and behaviors. Thus, there is no reason to suppose that one set of cultural values is superior to anothers, i. e. , we have cultural relativism. Most sophists then went on to extend this kind of relativism to morality as well (see the lecture on Moral Relativism! ). The sophists are most notable for being opposed by Socrates and Plato. That is, both Socrates and Plato disagreed with the sophists relativist views and perceived them as a danger to any community of rational people. Thus, many of Platos early and middle dialogues are specific arguments against the views of the sophists. (Although, it seems clear that some of his contemporaries considered Socrates, himself, a sophista view that I would strongly disagree with! ) Before going on to Socrates arguments and claims against the sophists, it would be well to discuss some of the more notable characteristics of the sophists. I. The SophistsTeachers of the art of persuasion by rhetoric in courts of law and politics: A. Secularistsskeptical or cynical of religion. Although none of these men grew up in an atheistic culture, their experience with the variety different cultures and religions in the Mediterranean and Aegean communities and their keen use of reason to examine these various cultures, convinced them that there is no compelling reason to favor one religion over another. This lead to a skepticism toward any supposed truth to be found in religion. Many older sophists, such as Protagoras, respected religion as a kind of social control, necessary for any large aggregate of people to co-exist. Thus, while skeptical of the religious claims, themselves, these sophists still supported and encouraged organized religion as promoting social cohesion. However, younger sophists were cynical of religions having any value beyond serving the interests of the elite, and thus rejected all religion out of hand. They viewed religion as a tool used by the aristocracy to impede the upward mobility of others and attempted to argue thus. B. Argument to persuade for personal gain rather than for the search for truth. What most distinguishes Philosophy from Sophistry are their goals. Both develop and use their critical thinking skills to the highest degree possible. But where Philosophy is first, and foremost, concerned with the search for Truth, the sophists used to their keen reason strictly for personal gain. Indeed, this is what they taught their students as the only appropriate use for reason. This should not be surprising since, as already noted, the sophists rejected any kind of objective standard, and thus Truth. Reason is viewed as merely one more tool to apply to furthering ones own ambitions and they would argue for any view that was advantageous at the moment. Indeed, the question of what views should be argued for is superfluous since it implies an objective standard of right and wrong. C. Fee for services education. Soccio seems to make much of this characteristic since the sophists are often considered the first to earn a living teaching. However, we should be careful about any praise we extend to them for being the first professional teachers. It is well-worth noting that although they did concern themselves with teaching their students what they know, we must keep in mind the nature of this particular mercantile education. Since there were no standards (nor could there be, given their relativist views) much of the knowledge and beliefs the sophists were paid to teach was political in nature and taylored to the desires of the student. That is, students were taught what they were willing to pay for, not what they ought to know. D. Concerns were pragmatic, rather than speculative. The sophists saw little or no value in knowledge for its own sake. If it could not be put to practical use there was no sense in teaching it or pursuing it. (Many of todays educrats seem to share this view! E. Egoism (look out for oneself at the expense of others) is taught as the proper ethics. Laws based on equality only benefit the weak. As the Gyges Ring Story suggests, most sophists reduce the issues of right and wrong to what can I get away with in a given situation. Thus there was a strong commitment to advancing ones social and political prominence in order to promote ones personal beliefs and desires. F. RelativistsMan is the measure of all things. This could lead to either culturalism or subjectivism. In chapter 5, The Wise Man: Socrates, Soccio presents a description of the person often credited with having pulled Philosophy down from the clouds; that is, Socrates applied his reason and judgment, not to questions about the nature of reality (although it seems clear that he held such opinions and derived his major social and moral views from them), but primarily to the question of what is the right way for human beings to live. Many of Socrates activities were directed toward exposing flaws in the beliefs and methods of many of the sophists who taught and practiced in Athens. The early dialogues of Plato such as The Apology, The Crito, The Phaedo, and The Euthyphro are usually considered fairly accurate accounts of Socrates activities and views, while the middle, e. g. , The Republic, and later, e. g. , The Laws, dialogues represent more and more of Platos own Philosophy. Although we only know Socrates through the dialogues of Plato and others, it seems clear that he disagreed with the sophists on most counts, and this eventually cost him his life. Platos accounts of Socrates life and activities are still enjoyable reading, both for Platos prose and Socrates method of question and answer to attempt clarification of complex concepts and beliefs (the Socratic method). Indeed, I have provided a link to a complete text of Platos Republic with a summary of much of the argument. The Apology is one of the best accounts of Socrates fundamental character and beliefs, as well as a great description of the business of Philosophy. Before going on to The Apology, please note some of Socrates fundamental beliefs and how they respond to those of the sophists. II. SocratesProper conduct based on reason. While the sophists experience and reason lead them to believe and promote cultural and ethical relativism, Socrates shows that reason actually demands an objective standard of social and personal conduct; the more one develops her reason, the more knowledge of Truth is acquired, and that knowledge inevitably leads to greater virtue. This view of the relation between virtue, knowledge, and Truth can be represented by the following five Socratic beliefs: A. Care for the soul above all else. The soul is the reasoning part of humans; and since reason is the only path to knowledge and Truth, the ultimate souces of value, development of the souls potential must be the central focus of our lives. While the variety of beliefs and values among cultures and individuals convinced the sophists that there are no objective values, Socrates argues that our ability to take note of such variation demands appeal to objective, rational standards. That is, as we observe and judge the beliefs and practices of others, that act seems to require a stable, rational soul that decides for itself which beliefs and practices to reject or pursue. On what other basis could we draw a judgment? B. Before we can care for the soul, we must understand it through careful self-examination of the souls function, which is virtue. Since reasoning implies judgment and judgment requires acquaintance with Truth to form its standard, analysis of the souls activity of reason implies the continued pursuit of this standard. Given the role it plays in cognition, according to Socrates, such a standard is what constitutes virtue. C. Virtue is knowledge. Being good is simply knowing the Good. (No room for weakness of will or character! ) That is, since the souls function is to be virtuous, and the virtue is the pursuit of Truth as our fundamental standard, the acquisition of knowledge just is doing good. Thus, morality is identified with knowing the Truth. One cannot know the Good and not act accordingly. If someone seems to acknowledge moral behavior but not behave morally, Socrates would suggest that that person merely parroted something they heard without truly understanding the nature of those moral statements. D. Doing evil only harms oneself (ones soul)see Platos Republic. Remember, the immaterial soul is the only avenue to Truth and virtue, and Truth and virtue are the fundamental values of human life. Any evil that someone might direct at another would only be manifested as physical behavior and thus not even touch the soul. However, the conscious decision to do evil to another requires ones soul to not pursue truth or virtue, and thus detract from the souls function. To detract from any function certainly seems to qualify as an evil. E. The principles of Good and Evil are above everything, even God(s); they are autonomous. Socrates was no atheist, but he does argue in The Euthyphro that the only rational understanding of the God(s) suggests that they appeal to the objective standards of Virtue, and indeed, it is their perfect consistency with those standards that makes them God(s) and so worth worshipping. The moral goodness of God continues to be an interesting Philosophical and Theological issue. Does God set the standard of morality or appeal to some standard? According to the USA Today/Kaiser/Harvard poll, 28 percent of adults were unable to pay for their medical care in the past year and 62 percent of those struggling to pay medical bills already have health insurance. Thats an understatement considering how rising premiums, deductibles, and gaps in coverage are affecting so many families in America today.
